Car of the Month

This month Rusty Easterling of Mississippi is sharing his newly restored EW1 Alpine white 1970 GTX with rare white bucket seat interior with us. It came with the standard 440-4bbl 375 horsepower engine backed by the heavy duty 727 automatic transmission and standard 3.23 gears in the rear end. Power assisted manual brakes, Airconditioning, AM radio, and center floor console were some of the options.

Read more of what Rusty has to say about his GTX below.

I purchased my 1970 GTX from Lindsey Duhs of Brandon Ms on December 21, 2010. Lindsey purchased the car February 12, 2003. Lindsey did all of the body work, paint and most of the interior of the car. My son Chris and I built the engine, had the transmission rebuilt, installed the fuel tank, gas lines, shocks, and replaced the front end along with a lot or wiring under the dash. This engine is a 440 HP when Lindsey bought the car he had to find the original block which was an adventure in itself but all it had was the block crank, rods and pistons. I had to replace one rod all the pistons and the crank. With help from Roger Wilson of the 1970 GTX registry and others I was able to find all of the correct numbered parts to rebuild the engine including intake, carb, exhaust manifolds and all the other items need to rebuild it back correct. This is a numbers matching car with the original vehicle identification number block, transmission and rear end. The engine build date was December 22, 1969 and the engine casting date is October 28, 1969. The car was restored back with all the factory options from the fender tag. The car was original built February 11, 1970 in St. Louis Missouri. Between Lindsey, Chris and myself it has been a pleasure bringing this car back to its original 1970 character. I took the car to the Scare Crow car show in Madison Ms and out of 407 entries the car received a top 50 award even before it was completed. The following are the specifications of the car from the fender tag codes. The body color was EW1 alpine white accented by a V1X-black vinyl top. The standard E86- 440-4bbl HP motor with the standard D32 HD 727 transmission went back to 3.23 gears in the rear. With AC came the HD 26" radiator. To assist in braking this muscle car, B51- power assist manual brakes were ordered. To keep things cool inside H51-air conditioning was included and to entertain the ears a R11-AM radio was ordered too. Standard items like the J25-three speed wiper motor, M21-drip trough moulding were included on the GTX. Other options ordered on this car included the A01-light package, C16- center floor console, G33- driver's remote mirror, J45- hood pins, L31-hood mounted turn signals, and V21-black hood performance paint treatment. To accent the white body and black top, a black reflective side sports stripe was also ordered.

1970 GTX registry note: So far Rusty's GTX is the only white with black vinyl top 4bbl automatic in the registry to have a white interior. There are 22 EW1 GTXs in the registry with various roof combinations with 4 of them being 4bbl automatics with black vinyl tops. Two have P6XA (black) interiors, with another having the interior unknown at this time. Rusty's is the only white bucket seat interior one so far.
