Car of the Month

Dave Clark's EF8 automatic 1970 GTX

This featured 1970 GTX is owned by David Clark of New York.  It was scheduled to be built at the St. Louis assembly plant on Oct. 20, 1969.  Dave relates that this GTX “was purchased by a friend of mine who we believe bought it from a family member, possibly the daughter of the original owner.  He owned the car for a short time before passing away.  He left the car to his brother who had it for several years in storage.  The brother then sold the car to another friend of ours who also kept in storage until 2019, when I purchased it.  He found the original broadcast sheet which verifies this as an original GTX.  It has a 440 engine with a 4bbl.  The car was stripped to bare metal and painted the original Ivy Green metallic.  This car was factory undercoated and is completely rust free.  The interior was also redone.  The engine has been rebuilt.  The car now runs and drives perfectly.”

Dave’s GTX was painted the third most popular color found on a 1970 GTX.  There were 728 painted the Ivy Green metallic paint.  Currently in the 1970 GTX registry there are 95 documented in that color.  When one sorts out of those 95 using EF8 paint top and bottom, ivy green high back bucket seat interior with center floor console with the 727 HD automatic transmission, plus an AM radio, it narrows it down to only 3 with those options.  According to the fender tag and broadcast sheet, this GTX was ordered with the Ivy Green metallic body and roof paint.  The Ivy Green bucket seat interior included the center floor console mated to the standard 727 HD automatic transmission.  3.23 gears were in the standard 8 ¾” rearend.  Music was provided by an AM radio, turning was assisted by power steering, and a tinted windshield only was also included.  White side wall tires (F70x14) were mounted on 14x5.5” ralleye rims.  Dave replaced the original green interior with a beautiful white interior.  Either a white, black or gold reflective side stripe was standard on all 1970 GTXs however this car was specifically ordered with the stripe deleted, however Dave added a black stripe.  To give the car a more “muscle car” appearance the flat black hood paint and hood pins were added.
